Reception half term topic overview for Autumn 2
Beech and Oak social story
Welcome to Reception Oak and Beech
What Can I Be?
The children in Reception have been thinking about what they will be when they grow up. They took part in a careers fair where they tried out lots of different jobs which included fire fighters, milliners, teachers, dog and cat walkers, window cleaners, structural engineers and illustrators.
We were lucky enough to have visits from some of our parents who told us all about the jobs that they do. We found out about physiotherapy, dentistry, working for the RSPB, going to university, being a scientist and what a health visitor does.
Are you afraid of the dark?
As the nights get darker, longer and colder, Autumn is the perfect time to celebrate so many wonderful festivals in our communities. We have learned that the dark nights bring with them lots of magic and joy.
We returned to school very excitedly after Halloween and lots of our friends couldn't wait to tell us about their costumes, parties and celebrations.
We read a book called 'Little Glow' which told us about lots of different festivals and celebrations which bring light into the darkness. The story told us a little bit about Lunar New Year, Diwali, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Halloween and Christmas.
Exploring Autumn
In Reception, we love getting outside whatever the weather! We have had great fun exploring the wonderful colours, smells and sounds of Autumn. We have read lots of lovely books about the changes the season of Autumn brings, and have enjoyed exploring these changes for ourselves outside! We hunted for crunchy Autumn leaves of different colours, found conkers and pine cones and other natural treasures. We used the natural objects to make some beautiful artwork inspired by Andy Goldsworthy.
